Commission Junction is one of the 800 pound gorillas of Affiliate Marketing. CJ is part of the publicly held ValueClick, which earned 39 million last year on marketing programs, including affiliate programs, email marketing and software for advertising agencies.

CJ handles affiliate programs for a lot of the big names, including Home Depot, Yahoo and Citibank.

Can you make money with Commission Junction? Like most affiliate programs it depend on the theme or niche of your web site, and how well you match your content and the CJ programs.

Our spider ran through the site recently, and Ive made a list of the major categories and their average Earnings Per Click (EPC). You will recall that EPC is calculated by taking the total commission payout for the advertiser and dividing it by the number of clicks that advertiser gets, so EPC measures how profitable each click is for the publisher. We used 7 day EPC, which measures EPC across the last seven days.

The spider also only saves the top ten advertisers in each categorysubcategory, and since some advertisers are in more than one categorysubcategory it tends to skew the results a bit (higher). We came up with an average of .56 (fiftysix cents) per click across the board averaging every category and subcategory.

Weve created a metric we call True EPC or TEPC, which measures the actual Earnings Per Single Click, rather than the earnings per hundred clicks that companies like CJ use to make the numbers look bigger.

Note I only included the first 5 categories here, and only part of the data. All of the data can be found at www.affiliateblog.com.

Heres a very interesting list by category

Category True EPC Top Ad TEPC

Financial Services 2.41 Get Smart 32.98
Insurance 1.25 American Life 2.98
Home Garden 1.16 Sunsetter 8.21
Web Services 1.13 Yahoo Hosting 3.75
Computer Electronics 0.87
Accessories 0.80
Health Beauty 0.76

What does it all mean? Well, to me it means that if you have a website that gets visitors interested in Loans, Insurance, Sunsetter awnings or Yahoo hosting, you should be a member of Commission Junction.

More generally, if you think you can get decent clickthrough on Finance, Home Garden, Insurance or Web Services, I would include some Commission Junction ads.

Some commentary on the top 4 ads what strikes me right off the bat is that the little Yahoo text ad at 4 pulls almost four bucks. I actually signed up for that program myself, and Im going to put it on this site when I get the chance. My calculations tell me that 15 to 17 clicks results in a signup.

Whats the flip side of all this data? There are categories that arent so great at CJ. If your site is about web services advice, handbags, new age, car travel or rentals, commercial insurance or weddings, Id look elsewhere. Another way to interpret the data would be to say that the marketers CJ has for those categories dont pull well. Still another would be that the type of sites that sign with CJ just dont attract the type of people that would click on ads in those categories. No matter how you slice it it still comes out the same it seems like CJ isnt the place to look to fill that ad space.

Not content with my mountain of data, I opened the firehose a little more. I ran a program that compared the average EPC for Paypersale programs vs. PayPerLead programs. For persale, the EPC was .36. For perlead it was .67. Intutitively I would say that advertisers pay more for sales than leads, so the clickthrough on leads has to be much higher on CJ, which also seems correct since less of a commitment is required from the visitor for a lead than a sale. So if you have a choice in programs between sale and lead, take the lead program.

So what did we learn here? It seems to me that if your site visitors would respond to banners or text links about mortgage financing, insurance, gardening or web services, add some CJ banners to the mix. What the heck, add them anyway if you have room, because experimentation is important to success in affiliate marketing. If you have a site with content that fits those categories or is a general interest or entertainment site, there are many good programs to choose from at CJ.

Lastly, I did a quick comparison of the average Adsense payout (using 80 of the average of keyword bids for different categories), and Adsense comes out a better EPC about a quarter of the time. So check Adsense first before you put up a CJ ad that has an EPC of a dollar or more. A big banner ad vs. an Adsense ad may seem like a good idea because more exposure may translate into more clicks, but you can fit three Adsense text ads in that banner space.

There are many hidden insights in the data, and I encourage you to go to the website, print out the page and take a look. There might be some terrificpaying programs you can ad to your website.

Id like to put together a free weekly email service that provides stats like the ones on this page. If this is something you might be interested in, drop me a line.

Spring is simply my favorite time of the year. Every year, around this time, the major fashion houses in the world release their new designs to the hungry masses. This season is certainly no exception, and some of the bags I have seen so far are simply amazing! We all have certain designers that we have grown to love and trust, but some of the new players out there have really impressed me this year. If you love purses and handbags the way I do, check out some of these new releases.

I have always been in love with Prada handbags. In fact, it was Prada that first inspired my love affair with purses. To be perfectly honest, I have never seen a Prada bag that I didn’t love. This year they have impressed me to no end. Words cannot describe the feeling I get when I see this bag. I am talking about the new PradaJute Snakeskin Hobo. For those you that love a bit of glitz and glamour, you will absolutely adore the gold snakeskin accents. The tan leather trim really helps neutralize the flashiness of the gold, and the simple beige weaved jute brings it a real sense of balance. The Prada logo is nicely located in the middle of the front side, beautifully mounted on a small wooden plate. Absolutely stunning!

Fendi is another one of those designers I cannot be without. While some of their purses are lessthanremarkable, certain others are nothing short of phenomenal. I have been raving about the Fendi Spy to all of my friends, and now I share this little secret with you. These might be difficult to find, as women everywhere are going mad over them. They have a few different purses available in this line, but the one I truly lust over is the Fendi Floral Spy Satchel. It is ohsocute! This bag has a wonderfully intricate floral appliqu on the front side, and the leather is as white as pure driven snow. Be still my beating heart!

Isabella Fiore has created what might be the cutest springtime bag ever! Has anyone out there had the pleasure of holding the new April Woven Bag? If you haven’t, I suggest you stop what you are doing and go find one. If you have, please wipe that drool from your mouth. It’s gross. The handles on this bag are constructed from the finest braided brown leather, and the flowers painted on the side are the stuff dreams are made of. Ooo la la! It has a magnetic closure, and a wonderfully durable canvas liner. I want to buy all of them up, so you can’t have one. Happy springtime shopping, ladies!

I remember, one afternoon in 2004, watching TV in my aunts sitting room in a small West Bank village. Much of the night before had been taken up speaking about the current toxic situation in the region, my family regaling me with tales of redemption, betrayal and fear. All told with a hefty serve of humour. I could tell that in some ways, peculiarly enough, there were people in other parts of the world who took their situation more seriously than themselves.

My feelings were confirmed when the next day I sat in front of the TV, flicking channels and finally settling on one of the many music stations taking the Arab world by storm. This one was called Superstar, not to be confused with the panArab Idol show of the same name, and it ran music videos and concert clips 247, SMS messages of love and flirtation scrolling constantly across the bottom of the screen in gaudy technicolour. A family friend later confirmed that they were watching Mazzika, another of these music channels, more than AlJazeera. It all seemed very bizarre to me, but I concluded that in such times of trouble, no matter how misguided it seemed, music videos, with their cheeky storylines and buffed, goodlooking and impossibly happy actors, obviously served as an antidote. Forget occupation and war Nancy Ajram had a new album out.

I guess not even a familiarity with Western MTV culture would prepare me for the pop culturesaturated Middle East I visited and slightly recoiled from. I write this as a Muslim who has grown up in Australia, but with an enduring love of my heritage. I encountered a Middle East I wasnt quite prepared for on many levels, but my understanding is layered and borne out of something entirely different to that of those women who visit the Arab world in search of tales of woe (think Geraldine Brookes Nine Parts of Desire and the more recent The Veiled Lands by Christina Hogan). And I think thats partly why I dont feel any richer for having read Muhajababes.

Meet Allegra Stratton, BBC journalist and twentysomethingyearold. She lets you know straight off the bat that shes a bit of a firecracker. Shes had an argument with her roommate about the legitimacy of the US invasion of Iraq roommate says its bad, Stratton thinks its good news. She soon realises that the war in Iraq is nothing short of a catastrophe and this somehow leads her to take some time off to explore the Middle East, no doubt in search of 10yearolds wielding AK47s. Id go there and see whether their young population in all its puppyfat enormity was taking form as the profs would like it to. I wasnt going to get into Iraq but I could go to countries near it, she tells us importantly and in what is, as I eventually realise, her humourlite style. There are funny moments, but shes not a comedian.

Strattons book of conversations is essentially that a record of her meetings with anyone who seemed her age whom she interviewed (youth being her basic criteria) during her trek through Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Dubai. What Stratton seems to have found is a bunch of pretentious, hippynostalgic luvvies, who, incidentally, are just as annoying as their Western counterparts.

To give you an idea of the flavour, consider some of the characters she covers theres Walid who wants to instigate revolution in Lebanon, despite having one of the less autocratic governments in that part of the world, and whom she describes as a lucky mixture of the best bits of some of the worlds foxier men. What Mr Potato Head would look like if he had David Bowies frame, Bob Dylans head, shoulders and slouch, and Jimi Hendrixs mania. She also meets the Jordanian Daoud, an untalented (according to Stratton) artist of nude paintings who barely scrapes by and neglects his widowed mother in pursuit of bad art. Then theres Darah, a sexually ambiguous woman who first introduces Stratton to the term muhajababe. It is Darah who, in gridlocked traffic, points out two girls who were cigarello thin and Coco Chanel chic. Both wore blacknylon bootcut hipster trousers and high heels, carried baguette handbags and wrapped around their heads were black sheer headscarves as tight as the rest of their outfits.

Finally, meet the muhajababes. Music clipinfluenced girls and the inspiration for the book, who appear to veil either because they have to or because Amr Khaled, an enormously popular preacher from Egypt, told them they should.

I think were meant to be overwhelmed and enlightened by this revelation. Yet none of this greatly surprised me, having seen countless young women on the street in Amman and even in Sydney adopt this approach for years, their bodies wrapped seductively in tight clothing, and their headscarves sitting loosely on their madeup faces, the scarf looking very much like a nuns habit without the cap. Muhajababes are everywhere, yet Stratton suggests shes discovered something extraordinary. In fact, this is one of the problems with her commentary she writes as though everything is shocking and finds a great deal taxing when it comes to fatwas and culture. She certainly doesnt seem to like Islam or Muslims very much, or perhaps its just a superior attitude of indifference with her seeming to roll her eyes impatiently every so often in response to all the silliness surrounding her.

Either way, Strattons Sesame Street approach to panArab politics and lifestyle is frustrating its all so unthinkable and peculiar to her, yet finding the Middle Easts losers or aspiring, dreamfuelled youth with a beef or two is hardly groundbreaking and I soon wondered how amazed we would be if an Arab woman went to the US and the UK and talked about all of the awful things she heard about.

Based on her conversations, Stratton zones in on two main figures Amr Khaled, who she paints as little more than a puffedup and ridiculous evangelical figure of influence for the starved masses who follow him, lemminglike, as he spreads the word. The other is wealthy Saudi Prince AlWaleed bin Talal, who runs these 247 music channels through his Rotana satellite stations.

The two are in stark contrast with each other, yet their respective influences connect. Khaled leads the reformation of Islam with personal trendy piety, or what Egypts Muslim Brotherhood (Al Ikhwan) once called, Stratton notes, airconditioned Islam, leading girls to hijab before theyre ready AlWaleed tells them what they should aspire to with his music clips. The result are muhajababes, girls who weakly attempt to reconcile the contradictory.

I took an obscene amount of notes as I read, yet none of it seems greatly significant now. Sufficed to say, both Khaled and AlWaleed exert great amounts of influence and are making changes in their own successdriven ways.

Muhajababes essentially proves that greed and stupidity are alive and well in the Middle East, and excels in demonstrating the obvious there are troubled areas, social misfits, a severe lack of freedom in general and a crucial diversity in attitudes, religiosity and culture. The Middle East is a melting pot of random things, and it is, not surprisingly, increasingly influenced by the West, Stratton observing that capitalists and major companies recognise the surge in palatable, Khaledstyle piety and are using it for their own gain, Westernstyle.

Take, for example, Sami Yusuf, the outrageously popular seminasheed singer whose video clips grace TV screens inbetween Ajram and Amr Diab and who even promoted Coca Cola when he released his first album. He falls squarely into the Khaledism slot a sexedup religious approach. There are certainly interesting anecdotes and snippets of worthy commentary, but overall, it is a disappointing trip into the ordinary.

Meanwhile, Stratton doesnt inject much of her own personality into the book, except to deliver cynical and, at times, snotty observations, all told in her oftcaustic style of overflowing prose. While refreshingly honest in her obnoxiousness, I couldnt help but feel that, while greatly amused by the simpletons she met, Stratton not only seemed bored and unimpressed but was also perhaps questioning why she was even there.

She confesses, at one point, to being bored by the subject of hijab, saying she wanted to find something a bit more fun. And thats the crux of it, because I am not convinced that this book, for all its magnanimous observations and research, is actually important. Rather, it seems little more than a young womans project to cash in on the Arab phenomenon hers is a search for the obscure and tryhardish in the Arab world, and the result is a catalogue of the disheartened, disenfranchised youth who, not very uniquely, have social problems to deal with.

The main difference with the Western worlds social problems being, obviously, a lack of democracy in the background. (And after reading some of the contentions contained within this book, one could truly think democracy is a cure for the worlds ills). As Stratton comments at one point, when she has become weary, she thought asking people about democracy in the Arab world was like talking about the weather, both because discussion of it was all around you, and because no one had any say in determining it.

I envision how this book will be sold. An intriguing and eyeopening insight into the Middle East, with Stratton cast as a hip, daring Westerner ready to smash through the stereotypes with every click of her keyboard. Yet, it is Stratton herself who casts people, hoping to find an A, B, C of culture clash and establishment rebellion. The more interesting conversations never occur, and she herself confesses that the book she wrote is not the one she initially set out to capture. I cant help but feel that there could have been much worthier tales to share and more deeply hidden experiences to uncover.

She ignores, for example, devout Muslims, depriving the book of any balance, focusing instead on selfhaters with delusions of grandeur and a gripe or three. Its all so hammy that even Stratton observes her struggle to not cringe when listening to one particular girls tale. These people offer their insight into why life is as it is for others, but more than anything they just complain and censure (for example, the girls not wearing hijab are quick to refer to muhajababes as the sluttiest girls around).

She does confirm that the Middle East has its own share of affected lattesippers to contend with. But admittedly, the sippers may actually have something to truly fight for because as Stratton takes 280 pages to inform you, the Middle East is a hotbed of change and revolution right now. Its just a shame you dont close the book and want to go there yourself.

Its amazing how people inadvertently set themselves up for a huge snack attack mid afternoon. For many, the set up is so complete that it is almost impossible to control! The result is that people think they are weakwilled and lacking in discipline. Often the answer has little to do with character or determination. More often the reason for the mid afternoon carbohydrate cravings is due to gaps in understanding how our body works and responds to diferent types of food. Read on to see what you can do to control those mid afternoon cravings.

Learn about iyouri trigger foods!

If you want to control those cravings there are a few principles you must be aware of. The first is concerning trigger foods. Nutritional research has documented, carbohydrates trigger the brain to crave more carbohydrates, leading to a cycle of carbohydrate eating that becomes hard to control. Trigger foods keep you fat. The goal is to have control over these foods rather than allowing them to have control over you.

What do trigger foods look like? Well, they vary from person to person, but typically look like soft drinks, potato chips, corn chips, peanuts, french fries, cheese, pizza, chocolate chip cookies, pretzel, apple pie, candy bar and so on. These are the foods that for many, “once we pop, we can’t stop!”.

Isn’t it amazing that all these types of foods are available from takeaway places? They are so readily available and have crept into our daily routine without us even planning it to happen. We get hungry, we are busy, we are distracted, and one serve leads to another and we don’t realise just how much we are eating as the triggering effect takes place in our brains. By eating a small portion of any of the above you can easily consume anywhere from 350 to 1000 calories. Two serves could be 700 to 2000 calories! Most women on a weight loss program are aiming for between 12001400 calories a day, so you can see that one snack can seriously sabotage your plans. Does this sound like you? I can hear the deep sighs of regret and frustration! Don’t worry, there are answers for you.

You can be empowered to take control when you know how to avoid the nutritional set up that will drive you towards trigger foods.

Here are a few simple principles that will deal a wounding blow to the late afternoon “snack monster”.

Five steps to avoid carbohydrate cravings

b1. Incorporate protein in to your breakfast AND lunch. bProtein is key to controlling carbohydrate cravings. The RDA of protein for women is 60 grams a day. For women wanting to lose weight, health professionals recommend approximately 100 grams of protein daily. Why? One of the principle advantages of protein is that it creates a feeling of fullness and satisfaction in the body that makes overeating much less likely. Source your protein from ultra lean sources so you don’t pick up unwanted calories and saturated fats.

Even better, than providing a sense of sustained fullness, protein can block the triggering effect that carbohydrates can have on the brain. If you eat protein with a carbohydrate it will reduce the cravings caused by eating the carbohydrate.

b2. Never skip meals.b Research has shown that people who skip meals are more prone to obesity than those who regularly eat 3 meals a day. In fact, people who space their daily food requirements by making appropriate use of healthy snacks do even better. Why is this? When you skip meals you are more likely to get hungry and fill up on easily obtained fast foods which are often trigger foods.

b3. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the day. bFor some people sugar laden soft drinks are a trigger food. Make sure you don’t get thirsty in the first place. Water creates a sense of fullness and has a host of other health benefits.

b4. Plan the timing of your meals so that you don’t get hungry.b Despite having three healthy meals a day, sometimes your work schedule can mean the spacing of those meals still does not guard against the carbohydrate cravings. If you have a long gap between meals, make sure you carry healthy snacks to cover the distance, otherwise hunger will set in

b5. Plan your snacks.b Plan out your weekly snack schedule with some delicious, healthy snacks. Purchase these with your weekly shopping so that you are fully prepared. If you need to, get up a few minutes earlier in the morning so you have time to prepare and take your snacks to work. Remember, healthy snacks don’t live in a vending machine! You are less likely to get hungry when you have a ready supply of healthy snacks.

b6. Carry emergency supplies of nutritional protein bars in your handbag or brief case. bWhen you feel a carbohydrate craving, eat the protein bar instead and wait 30 minutes before acting on the craving. More often than not the craving will pass and you will be in control again. This truly works!

Incorporate these principles into your daily routine and you could be well underway to change your life and be able to take control over the mid afternoon ’snack attacks’.

Are you the type of person who just dumps all of her makeup and beauty needs into her handbag? Have you ever experienced trying to fumble for your lipstick inside your clutch because your cosmetics are in disarray? Are you guilty of traveling with all your cosmetics, hair care and skin care supplies in a plastic bag or zip lock? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you are one of the many who are very disorganized when it comes to handling their beauty regimen items and need something for their travel and storage needs. To avoid losing items or misplacing them I recommend that you get yourself a cosmetic bag.

There are different kinds of cosmetic bags depending on the style and design you want. They also come in a variety of colors and sizes depending on your need. They range from the small cute ones to large ones that even come with wheels looking like small suitcases used for traveling. A small bag to contain just several items like your lipstick and compact powder to be slipped in your purse for work or for a date would be appropriate. You can also find a much larger cosmetic bag if you need to bring more items for a day out or a very short trip. If you will be traveling for a longer period of time you would need a foldable cosmetic bag or those with pockets and compartments for easy organization. You also have those multi tiered travel cases that come with removable trays.

Your cosmetic bag is not only for your makeup but you can also contain here your shampoo, conditioner, other hair care products and even your manicure kit. You could also include here clips for your hair and your hair dryer if it is big enough to accommodate it.

When choosing a cosmetic bag select those that are durable and easy to clean. It is best if the inner material is made of fabric with a plastic overlay for easy cleaning that can easily be wiped.

Cosmetic bags really help a girl organize her makeup. For me the best cosmetic bag would be one that has tailored specific compartments or pockets for the different products encasing it in a protective container. With a cosmetic bag to suit your needs, you dont only travel in style, you have no excuse to not be able to do a retouch and look your best at all times.

For a long time now insurance companies have been jumping on the bandwagon and offering cheaper womens car cover based on the fact that women are safer drivers than men. This is likely to continue as new research has revealed that women drivers are less to go out and about in their cars during severe weather conditions and with severe winter weather being the cause of many accidents, womens claims will remain down.

Icy conditions, windy and snowy conditions are all main causes of accidents on the road which then lead to an insurance claim, if women remain indoors then they are less likely to be involved in an accident which will make sure that they keep their good driving record. As reward for this many specialist insurance websites have popped up solely selling womens car cover which offer lower premiums and bonuses. However searching for the insurance yourself is not generally the way to the best deals when it comes to premiums, premiums can be confusing and advertised misleading.

Very low premiums for any type of car insurance is not always the best way to go, car insurance should be tailored to the individual and certainly in the case of the women driver. A far better option when it comes to getting the quotes for womens car cover is to go with a specialist broker.

A specialist broker will take into account that you are a woman driver and as such limit their search to those insurance companies that offer insurance aimed at women. Along with securing the cheapest premiums for the cover they will also look for the best deals which can include handbag cover and some basic form of breakdown cover. Just as important as getting low cost insurance is getting adequate cover and the information relating to the policy so that you can compare it with the premiums.

The key facts are where the terms and conditions relating to womens car cover can be found and it is essential that you go over this with a fine toothcomb to be aware of what is and is not included in the cover. It will also tell you how much excess you are asked to pay before the policy will kick in and tell you how much the cover will cost each month. All insurance policies can have exclusions in them, these are factors which could stop you from making a claim so it is imperative that you are aware of any that exist in any policy you are considering.

There can be many benefits to taking out womens car cover and a specialist broker will offer information and advice on what to look for and how to choose the most suitable policy for your particular needs. Specialists who sell car insurance tailored for women can also offer other related insurance such as complete breakdown cover for a fraction of the cost if it is taken out alongside the car insurance. So if you are thinking of taking this out as well ask the broker to look for a combined policy which could save you even more money.

You have just arrived in the Renaissance capital of the art world with a couple of days to spare, so where do you go and what highlights can you see in such a short time? This is the guide for you to get the maximum out of a short stay in Florence.

1400
Now is probably a good time to familiarise yourself with the central city, if its late summer it will be beginning to cool down and hopefully the crush of the tourist crowds will be starting to diminish. The centre of Florence is easy to walk around as the streets are narrow and most are closed to traffic.

Starting off around the main station there is the Piazza Santa Maria Novella with the church that gives the train station its name. Opposite the church there is the Piazza Nazionale and a road which leads down to the Piazza del Mercato Centrale. Here there are a few market stalls selling leather goods, souvenirs and other items. The 2 famous buildings to see here are the Cappelle Medici and the San Lorenzo e Biblioteca Laurenziana.

1500
You will see the Duomo before you reach the piazza it resides in as you walk down Via Borgo San Lorenzo. The squat building in front of the cathedral is the Baptistery, built on the foundations of a Roman temple. The golden doors facing the cathedral are replicas of an original set made by Lorenzo Ghiberti and regarded by Michelangelo as the doors to paradise. But the sight most visitors are bowled over by is Brunelleschis dome, the cap on the already impressive Chiesa Santa Maria del Fiori. Standing guard beside it is the campanile, or bell tower built by Giotto.

The view from the top of the Duomo is incredible on a clear day and well worth the trek to the top. Entry to the church itself is free but there is a charge to make the climb. You can also climb the bell tower but run the risk of the bells going off at some point and there is no lift if you need assistance to get back down.

1600
Many of the original works that were used to decorate the exteriors and interiors of the baptistery, church and campanile are house inside the Museo dellOpera del Duomo, behind the cathedral, the museum rooms that catalogue the history of the buildings. There are many pieces by Michelangelo, including his Pieta that he partially destroyed, which was finished later by a student. The original baptistery doors are housed here along with Duomo plans from Brunelleschi, statues and bas reliefs by Donatello and others.

1700
Walking down Via Roma you will reach Piazza della Repubblica, the edges are taken up with expensive hotels and even more expensive cafes. There are some stalls selling various touristy type things, including more belts, wallets and handbags. Keep walking down Via Calimara until you reach the loggia that houses more market stalls. Here you can test your skills at spotting a fake leather item although you dont want to make this too obvious. Better still you can drop a coin from the mouth of il Porcolino, the bronze statue of a boar, and make a wish.

1730
Looking straight ahead you will see what resembles a crowded street rising up at the end of Via Porta Santa Maria. This is actually a bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, the Old Bridge, which was the only one spared by the Nazis in WWII. The original shops were butchers, dropping their leftovers into the Arno below. The stench got up the Medicis noses in the 16thC so much that Grand Duke Ferdinando I ordered them to move out and the more aesthetically pleasing goldsmiths to move in. This is also one of 3 bridges in the world to house shops.

1800
Make your way back to the northern end of the bridge where there is a covered colonnade heading left alongside the river. This was built as a secret passageway for the Medicis as they walked above the populace between the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace. At the far end of the walkway you can look back to see the rear of the shops as they overhang the river below.

Behind you is also the entrance to the Piazza Degli Uffizi, a three sided piazza filled with statues and busts of famous artists from over the centuries, and of course home to the world famous Uffizi Gallery. The collection inside is second only to that of the one held at the Vatican in terms of artistic significance. Giotto, Fra Angelico, Lippi, Botticelli, Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo the list goes on. The gallery is closed on Mondays and needs at least half a day to get around, as well as to be booked in advance if you wish to view it in summer. The piazza is commonly filled during the summer with outdoor exhibitions, street artists and performers, mainly to entertain the long meandering line of tourists queuing up to get in.

Carry on through the narrow piazza away from the river until you reach Piazza Signoria. This wide open space is most recognisable by the statue of David, a copy put there in 1873 as the original had to moved inside the Accademia to protect it from the elements. Underneath the loggia is a collection of other famous statues including The Rape of the Sabines, Hercules and the Centaur Nessus, by Giambologna and Cellinis bronze statue of Perseus.

The main space is overlooked by the rather imposing statue of Il Nettuno, the watery figure of Neptune standing at the opposite end of Palazzo Vecchio. Close by is the mounted figure of Cosimo I Medici and the bronze plaque that marks the spot where the priest Savonarola was hanged and burned for heresy in 1498. For the super sleuths there is a another sculpture to look out for. On the wall of the Palazzo Vecchio is the carved outline of a mans face. One legend tells that Michelangelo, in a fit of pique, was proving to Donatello he was able to sculpt great works of art, even with his hands behind his back.

Inside Palazzo Vecchio the entrance shows ornate ceilings and wall decoration for this building was once the seat of Florentine government during the 13th and 14th Centuries. For a fee you can view the opulent apartments upstairs that were occupied by Medicis and other notables as well as reach the battlements for another view out over the city.

The remainder of the evening can be best spent wandering the narrow streets and enjoying a meal from one of the many restaurants and trattorias. Later on there is the night life as many bars and clubs open up after 10pm and carry on until very early in the morning.

Florence is a tourist magnet all year round so an early start is essential if you dont wish to spend countless hours queuing. A surefire way to avoid this is to part with a little extra cash in the busy summer months and pre book your tickets online or over the phone. You then pick them up at a designated time from the ticket office with your booking number. This way you can easily get to see the Uffizi and possibly another museum in the same day. To do this simply log onto www.firenzemusei.it or www.weekendafirenze.com or book through your hotel.

The Uffizi opens at 8.15am, closing at 7pm, with the artworks divided between a series of rooms all featuring a certain artistic style or period. The gallery is not restricted to just greats of the Italian renaissance but the collection also includes works by German and Flemish artists. To appreciate much of the work you would need to devote at least several hours to get round.

Either as an afternoon escape or a morning alternative there is also the Galleria DellAccademia, most famous for its prize possession, Michelangelos David, the original sculpture that stood in Piazza della Signoria. The 5m tall statue was carved from a single slab of marble which some tales relate as having a fault line running through it. Michelangelo was said to have found it at abandoned at the rear of the artisan school and decided he would use it to create a symbol of Florentine spirit.

The Accademia also has other well known statues, paintings and carvings by many artists on display, well worth an hour or two looking around.

For a plesant way to round off the day there is a walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo from the southern river bank, where you will find yet another copy of Michelangelos David, a bronze version overlooking the city. A great place to watch the city change colour at sunset and sometimes there are public events held in the piazza during the summer.

If there is still enough energy left to view one more church Chiesa di San Miniato al Monte is worth the extra effort. Situated in the parklands up behind Piazzale Michelangelo the exterior is one of the best examples of Tuscan Romanesque architecture while the interior is home to some extraordinary 1315th C frescoes.

Depending on your time table you may have time for another set of museums or just a gentle stroll in the park. Head up to the Pitti Palace, another Brunelleschi creation for a wealthy banker that was eventually taken up by the Medici family. Inside are a series of museum rooms all dedicated to various items such silver, porcelain and renaissance clothing as well as more modern artworks from the 18th and 20th Centuries.

When the art intake has finally reached its limit there is respite in the shape of the Boboli gardens to the rear of the palace. Designed in the mid 16th C it contains typical grottoes and garden follies of the renaissance aristocracy. A chance to leave the narrow streets and tourist crowds for a while.

Your time in Florence is at an end but you may still have a chance to do a bit of that last minute shopping before bidding farewell to all the masters.

The popularity of designer handbags is at an alltime high. Everywhere we look, from the high street to the nightclub, everyone is carrying a trendy new purse. It seems that we are often so preoccupied with our new handbags that we tend to forget about the people behind the designs. I started trying to develop a shortlist of my favorite designers, but I realized that I am in love with the work of far too many to list. The following are just a few of my favorites.

Chloe is, by far, one the greatest design houses in the world. I absolutely love their work! At times, I feel that some of the French designers are a little over the topbut where would true fashion be without their sense of creativity and innovation. Chloe has been a leader in the world of fashion, especially since the Stella McCartney assumed the helm. Her star power and understanding of classic design reinvigorated a company that was often lacking the cohesive aesthetic that truly binds a collection together. Make no mistake about itChloe is the new Gucci!

Vivienne Westwood has done more for British design that any other designer in modern times. In many ways, the entire punk genre owes her a debt of allegiance. Vivienne was just a young girl during the heyday of punk, when she met a fellow named Malcolm McLaren. For those of you not particularly well versed in your punk rock history, Malcolm was the manager of the consummate British punk band The Sex Pistols. After dressing the Pistols for a number of years, she opened her own shop in London called Sex Boutique. Punks worldwide have adopted her design aesthetic, and the rest is history.

Monica Botkier is yet another brilliant designer. Her designs are held in high esteem by women all around the world. After spending the early part of her career as a fashion photographer, Monica Botkier has certainly spent enough time in the fashion world to know what constitutes a great handbag. She is able to strike the perfect balance between function and form, and her designs are some of the most sought after with fashionistas everywhere. Monica Botkier’s designs are famous for their detailing, hardware, and innate sophistication.
